This has been a subject on my mind for quite a while. Are salutations really necessary for all emails? Emails are a less formal means of communication that really should be short and effective. Sometimes I have made longer emails but they are usually less than 5 lines.
With salutations you have already typed the recipient’s email address into the “To” field. And your email address (and name) will appear in the “From” field. So why have a salutations. The only place I can really see salutations is in business emails which are more formal. Many times the email is a business address like complainhere@gadgets .com. So if you are contacting a certain individual hopefully the person on the receiving end of the address will forward within the company. It you do not have a name then I believe To it concerns may be a better choice. Plus it is more polite to use a salutation. However, to friends and family it is usually just a short message and not always with a salutation. It I do use a salutation it is usually Hi or Hello. Growing up Hey! was impolite and a admonishment. “Hey/Hay is for horses!”
